Clean Mountain Can - Human Waste Containment
The Grand Canyon National Park and several other management agencies require removal of human waste in hard sided, leak proof containers. Rafting trips usually use large, heavy metal containers with great volume. Those are impossible for small vessels like packrafts or kayaks. The Clean Mountain can was developed for mountaineering trips in Denali National Park. At 2.5 lbs it is the lightest option I've found. The silver insulation provides a light weight moderately durable means of protection the pontoons of a packraft from the hard edges of the plastic. The black cap of the can has been modified by removing the 4 taps that usually stick up 0.5 - 0.75" above the top. Those tabs facilitate opening the can if it is closed tightly. However, they are deadly for the packraft material (pontoons and spray deck) so I removed them & smoothed the cap. When in place in the bow of the packraft I cover the top of the can with a cap of the same insulation material as seen here on the sides.
